Thisminiature plate ornament is reminiscent of the beautiful historic Tobacco Leaf china pattern.The extravagantdesignwas originally made in China, probably for export to the Portuguese and Brazilian markets. Of all the 18th century dinnerware patterns, thisis the most highly prized. Some of George and Martha Washington china pieces in this pattern are now in the Mount Vernon collection.
This reproduction design features asmall phoenix bird perched on thevibrantleaves of the flowering Nocotiana (Tobacco) plant. The original Mottahedeh pattern had twenty-seven colors and streaks of 22k gold; the original dish pattern is now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
